Benefits of College Credit

When students enroll in Advanced Placement, College in the High School, Running Start or CTE Dual Credit, they may earn dual credit - high school and college credit - after meeting specific criteria such as successfully completing the same course, demonstrating technical competencies, or passing an exam.

Dual credit helps students:

Transition smoothly from high school to college
Reduce duplication of courses in a program of study
Shorten time-to-completion of a degree or certificate
Save money

How dual credit works:

The student enrolls in their high school or college course
The student completes the requirements of the course
The student submits college grades to the high school for high school credit
The student may be required to submit documentation to the college they wish to attend for review
The college may review the documentation and determines what credits will be awarded based on the individual college's policy

Ways to Earn College Credit

Status AA Degree at YHS

We are excited to offer College in the High School (CiHS) courses and an Associate of Arts Direct Transfer degree (AA-DTA) through South Puget Sound Community College and Central Washington University at Yelm High School. YHS counselors will work closely with students to enroll in the correct courses at the high school, though they do not assist with the college enrollment process. Students are required to enroll directly through SPSCC and CWU to earn college credit. Advisors, educational planners, and navigators from SPSCC and CWU are available to assist students with the college enrollment process.

CTE Dual Credit Courses - SERS Statewide Enrollment and Reporting System

You can apply up to 15 CTE dual credits toward your AA-DTA. The number of credits you earn may vary by college, which is why the "Credits" column notes "up to...credits." The exact credits awarded depend on the college you choose. As you near the end of your senior year, you will request transcripts from the college(s) where you earned CTE Dual Credit. Since each school has its own process, it’s important to keep your SERS login/password and the registration form provided by your teacher or access your records in SERS. Be sure to follow each college's specific instructions posted on the CTE Dual Credit website.

College in the HS

This program provides high school students the opportunity to earn college credit in approved high school courses. Review the COURSE CATALOG with descriptions of courses offering college credit. These courses require registration at the college but are free of charge.

Advanced Placement

Advanced Placement courses are college-level courses offered in high school. AP courses include extensive reading and writing. Students in AP courses may earn college credit if they perform well on rigorous national AP tests. Students enrolled in an AP course are encouraged to test their knowledge and may earn college credit with high scores on these tests. Ask your school counselor for assistance in selecting courses that will prepare you for success in any AP course that interests you.

Running Start

Running Start is a program designed for juniors and seniors who choose to enroll in Community College in order to earn college and high school credit simultaneously for courses completed at the 100 level and above. Students must qualify for the program by placing for English 101 at the community college.

Running Start covers the cost of tuition however, students are responsible for the purchase of textbooks, supplies, transportation and other necessary fees (can be up to $600 per quarter with books). Students new to Running Start are encouraged to attend an information session prior to enrolling. College Advisors assist students when planning the two year degree requirements and, high school counselors advise students for high school graduation requirements.

CTE Dual Credit

CTE Dual Credit is technical college credit earned in high school that gives students a jump start to a college education. Student completing approved technical classes while in high school can earn both high school and college credit simultaneously. In order to receive college credit students must

meet specific grading criteria for each class which requires a minimum of a grade each semester and
other technical performance competencies outlined by the college
